School bus drivers transport students to and from school and related events. In the morning, they pick students up at designated bus stops and drop them off at school. In the afternoon, they drive back to the school, wait for students to board, and drive them back to the same designated bus stops. Drivers usually take the same routes every day.
Drivers also transport students and faculty on field trips and to extracurricular performances or sporting events. These trips may take place on weekends or at night.
Because the physical safety of students is paramount, drivers must be trustworthy and reliable and have excellent driving records. They must be alert in heavy traffic or bad weather and exercise great caution when children are getting on or off the bus. In some instances, they may have to maintain order and discipline unruly students, so they must know the school system s rules for student conduct. They must prevent unauthorized persons from getting on their buses.
EXPERTISE TO: Maintain order among the students on the bus. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Recognize malfunction of the bus and take appropriate actions. Maintain proper paperwork. Properly report all accidents. Assist in the loading and unloading of students and their equipment. Assist handicapped or disabled students. Render 1st aid as needed. Perform other duties related to this position. Receive general supervision from a Transportation Supervisor or the Dispatchers.
WORK CONDITIONS: Drivers work part time many are on the road fewer than twenty (20) hours per week ..and only when school is in session.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must have high-school certificate or the equivalent and good driving records
Must have a D Driver s License
Must pass Physical Examinations with a Medical Certificate; Drug and Alcohol Screenings, and Criminal Experience Checks
Must provide current Court, Police, and Traffic Clearances
Must provide current CPR and 1st Aid Certificates
